Event Details
In 1921, in a small community in Tulsa Oklahoma, there was a Black paradise called Greenwood. This community consisted of Blacks, who fled the oppression of the South; to carve out for themselves their place in history. They formed a peculiar society of Blacks, Indians and Jews, who respeted and did business with each other. In time, some of the Blacks who happened to settle on oil rich land became incredibly wealthy. So wealthy, in fact, that the town was soon known as Black Wall Street. In a mere 36 block section of town, these African-Americans owned and operated up to 600 thriving businesses.
One of the most popular of these businesses was Old Lady Boley's, an eating establishment which is where our play begins. One Sunday evening, the town's more influential citizens gathered to have their pictures taken for the local newspaper; in honor of the community's 20th anniversary. Before the play ends, the entire community of Greenwood is completely burned to the ground. In a 12 hour period, a major Black economic movement is halted.

New Heritage Theatre Group (NHTG) is the oldest Black nonprofit theater company in New York City, established in 1964 under the name New Heritage Repertory Theatre by the late Roger Furman, a revered playwright, director, actor and lecturer who began his career in the 1940s with the American Negro Theatre in Harlem.
NHTG’s mission was to present entertaining, informative, and quality productions at affordable prices. NHTG productions seek to preserve and institutionalize classic works of Black theater. In1983, Voza Rivers, an award winning music and theatre producer took over the company. In 1997 Jamal Joseph, an award-winning writer, director, documentary filmmaker and educator, joined NHTG as Executive Artistic Director. Under the leadership of both Mr. Rivers and Mr. Joseph, NHTG expanded its mission and transformed the theatre into a leading nonprofit arts organization serving tens of thousands of community members and youth annually. http://www.newheritagetheatre.org
